The Detroit Red Wings are a National Hockey League team (NHL) that plays their home games at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI. They play in the Atlantic division of the Eastern Conference. Other NHL teams in the same division include the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadians, Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Ottawa Senators,
The Detroit Red Wings are one of the most storied and successful franchises in all of the professional sports. They are rich in history and are part of the "Original Six" teams in the NHL. The other five teams are the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadians and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The city of Detroit, where the Red Wings play is nicknamed "Hockeytown" because of the love of the Red Wings and the rich history that the fans have. Of all the American NHL franchises. they have been the most successful. Some of the best players in NHL history have also played for the Detroit Red Wings, 58 former players are in the Hall of Fame, and many team executives as well. Joe Louis Arena, where the team played for 37 years was considered one of the best places to watch a hockey game. The team moved into their new stadium, Little Caesars Arena at the start of the 2017-2018 season and have yet to make the playoffs in the new stadium.
Gordie Howe, who is in the NHL hall of fame and is considered to be one of the best players to ever play the game, played for the Red Wings from 1946-1972. During that time he was able to lead the team to 12 NHL Stanley Cup Finals and the team won 4 of them, all in the 1950s. It is hard to go back so far in time and still have any former player for any organization of any sport that has had such an impact on a team's history. What Babe Ruth is to the New York Yankees and the whole sport of baseball is a great way to sum up what Gordie Howe is to the Detroit Red Wings and the whole sport of Hockey.
Although the Red Wings have failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs in any of their last four seasons, they have been one of the most successful NHL teams and have made plenty of playoff appearances in years past. Starting with 1933 where they lost in the Semi-finals 2-0 to the Boston Bruins, the team has gone on to the postseason playoffs a staggering 62 times. Most impressive though is the 2 of the streaks that they went on to accomplish.

The Detroit Red Wings have made it to the Stanley Cup Finals 24 times in the history of their franchise. Their first trip to the finals was in the 1934 Finals when they played the Chicago Blackhawks and lost 3-1. They would miss the playoffs entirely the next year and then in 1936 the team would win its first Stanley Cup Championship by beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1. Not to be outdone, the team won the Stanley Cup the following season also by defeating the New York Rangers 3-2 in the finals.
The last time that the Red Wings have won a Stanley Cup Championship was in 2008. Under coach Mike Babcock, the team finished the regular season with a 54-21-7 record. The Nashville Predators were first up in the '08 playoffs and the Red Wings won that series 4-2. Next up in round 2 was the Colorado Avalanche. The Wings only needed 4 games in the best of 7 series to sweep the Avalanche 4-0 and make it to the conference finals to play the Dallas Stars. While the Stars turned up to be a tougher matchup than the Predators were the round before, Detroit was still able to beat them in 6 games 4-2 and solidify their spot into the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Red Wings would once again only need 6 games to defeat their opponent as they took the series 4-2 and once again, the Stanley Cup was home in Detroit.
