The New Orleans Pelicans are a National Basketball Asociation (NBA) team that plays its home games at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, LA. The Pelicans were first known as the New Orleans Hornets because before the 2002-03 NBA season the team was moved from Charlotte, NC. as the Charlotte Hornets and they kept the name. It wasn't until 2013 that the team would rename itself the Pelicans, named after the state bird of Louisianna, the Brown Pelican.
Many things happened between those years to the team location, team history, and the Charlotte Hornets History. Because of the damage that Hurricane Katrina dealt the city of New Orleans in 2005, the team had to relocate to Oklahoma City from the 2005-06 season to the end of the 2006-07 season. During that time, they were known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets.
Then there was the issue with the name Hornets. In 2004, two years after the Hornets left Charlotte, NC. the NBA awarded an expansion franchise to the city of Charlotte once again, this time they would be named the Bobcats. in 2013 during the time the New Orleans Hornets changed their name to the Pelicans, the NBA awarded the name of Hornets back to the city of Charlotte. The Charlotte Bobcats would now be known as the Charlotte Hornets once again. Along with the name change came everything that the name Hornets and Bobcats have done collectively in the city of Charlotte, including all records and statistics.
Before the team officially became the Pelicans and were known as the Hornets, their statistics and records, including playoff appearances, went all the way back to the 1989-90 NBA season when the then Charlotte Hornets became an expansion franchise. Once the NBA awarded the Hornets back to Charlotte, that franchise was able to take back all of their history and statistics before the move to New Orleans. So that is why when you look up statistics for the New Orleans Pelicans, you will not see anything precluding 2002, the year they started playing in New Orleans.
Since the Pelicans entered the league in the 2002-2003 season, they have made the NBA playoffs 7 times and have never made it to the NBA finals or won an NBA Championship. The furthest that they have made it in the playoffs is the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, which they have done 2 times, 2008 and 2018. Here is a list of the years that the Pelicans have made the playoffs by decade.
Decade | Playoff Appearances | Years they made playoffs |
2000s | 4 | 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009 |
2010s | 3 | 2011, 2015, 2018 |
2020s | 0 | Have not made NBA playoffs |
