The Dallas Mavericks are a National Basketball Asociation (NBA) team that plays its home games at American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX. They are one of three NBA franchises in the state of Texas, the other two being the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets. The Mavs joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1980. They would hire Dick Motta to be the team's first head coach and they would play their first official game in the NBA on Saturday, October 11th, 1980 at their new home court, Reunion Arena. Dallas would win that game vs. the San Antonio Spurs 103-92, little did they know at the time but that win would be 1 of only 15 that the Mavericks would get in the 1980-81 season but basketball fans were elated that they had an NBA franchise in Dallas.
The first 10 years fared pretty well for the team as they managed to make the playoffs in 6 of them, but then came the 1990s and the once happy fans in Dallas were starting to lose interest in the team because they were failing to put any sort of a winning team on the floor. They would fail to make the playoffs in every season of the '90s and did not have a winning record in any of those years.
In 2000, Mark Cuban purchased majority ownership of the Mavericks for a reported $285 Million Dollars and vowed to bring an NBA championship to the city of Dallas. The team would go on to make the playoffs in his first season as owner, their first appearance in 12 years, as they finished with a 53-29 record. In Cuban's first 12 years as owner of the Mavs, the team would have 2 trips to the NBA Finals, winning 1 of them and making the playoffs each of those 12 years.
The Mavericks have only made it to the playoffs in 1 of their last 4 seasons with their last playoff appearance in the Covid-19 shortened regular season of 2019-2020. Head coach Rick Carlisle will be headed into his 13th season at the helm and the team's future is looking good again. 2019-2020 leading scorer Luca Doncic will be once again leading the team and hoping to improve from last seasons 43-32 regular-season record.
The Dallas Mavericks have made the NBA playoffs a total of 22 times in their franchise history. The last time the team made the playoffs was after the 2019-20 regular season when they lost 2-4 in the 1st round to the Los Angeles Clippers. Here is a look at the Mavs playoff history.
