Cubs vs. Pirates History

The Chicago Cubs vs the Pittsburgh Pirates' first game ever played against one another happened on 4/30/1887. The Cubs were known as the Chicago White Stockings at the time and the Pirates were known as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. Pittsburgh went on to win that game 6-2. It wasn't until 1903 that the two teams played the first game against one another with the team names that we know them as today. That is because even though the Pittsburgh Franchise changed their name 13 years earlier to the Pirates, it wasn't until 1903 that Chicago changed their name to the Cubs.

In recent years, the Cubs and Pirates could not have played each other more evenly. From 2010 - 2019, in 180 regular-season games, they finished dead even with a 90-90 record. In 2015, the Pirates hosted the Cubs for the National League Wild Card game. The Cubs won that game 4-0 and went on to play in the NLDS. It was the first time in the 128 years that they have been playing each other that they had met in an MLB playoff game.

Geographically, the Pirates are the furthest opponent from Chicago in their division and fans don't travel as much to see games in Pittsburgh as much as they may make short drives to other division opponents like the Milwaukee Brewers or the St. Louis Cardinals. The same can be said for Pirates fans, who have a closer division rival in Cincinnati with the Reds.
