Although the Cubs and Marlins do not play in the same division, there is quite a bit of history. It was the Marlins that came back to beat the Cubs in the 2003 NLCS in the famous "Steve Bartman game". At the time, the Cubs were up 3 games to 2, with a 3 -0 lead on the Marlins in the top of the 8th inning of game 6. The Cubs were only 5 outs away from their first National League Pennant in 58 years when Luis Castillo of the Marlins fouled a ball down the left-field line. Moises Alou, who was playing left field for the Cubs, attempted to catch the ball as it was within reach of his glove, but definitely in the stands (so it was no fan interference). Steve Bartman, who was sitting in the first row in Section 4 (seat 113 to be exact) along with several other fans, attempted to catch the foul ball. It was Bartman's hands that would ultimately interfere with Alou catching the ball, and the rest is history. Who knows, if Moises Alou simply had gone back to his left-field position after the play it might not have intensified the situation. But that is not what happened. Clearly frustrated because he believes that he would have caught the ball for the 2nd out of the inning, Alou threw his hands down in anger as he yelled at the fans for interfering. This reaction sent the Wrigley Field fans into a frenzy. It was made worse, and Bartman had to be snuck out of Wrigley field by security because the Marlins went on to score 8 runs in the inning and ultimately win the game 8-3, followed by a game 7 in which the Marlins beat the Cubs 9-6 to win the 2003 NLCS. The Marlins would then go on to win the World Series by beating the Yankees 4 games to 2.
